The Space Between
What does that statement mean to you “the space between”? I’ve been pondering a lot on this statement. In life there is space between the moments in our days, between one life event to another, between gatherings with family or friends. Often, I find myself so focused on the moments ahead, or perhaps even reliving the moments gone, that I lose focus on the space that happens in between. At times these spaces may feel like transitions or pauses.
Have you ever arrived somewhere in life and it kind of feel like a blur? You were so focused on the outcome, the arrival, that you wonder “how did that come so fast?”. If you were go take the time and go back to analyze it, you’d likely still focus on the bigger steps that made the outcome possible. But what about all the small moments of time that were a part of the equation that existed. Moments that might not hold a significant memory but that were essential to the process.
How can we consider this within our yoga practice? The space between each breath, that moment before we make the breath exchange. The space between each pose, that pause that can be as small as the pause between the exchange of breath – in a flow practice – or the pause of several breaths where we focus on the finer details of the posture. More atomically, the space we can create within our joints that help create more easeful movement within our bodies. In all instances, that space is required. But often forgotten within our practice.
This week we will work on the space in between, our breath, our postures, our bodies.
Let’s look ahead at how we can build our practice this week:
Breathwork Practice: This week I feel out breathwork needs to be done in a quiet space to allow out focus to be on the sound of our breath. Let’s remove sounds as much as possible. Using our Ujjayi breath, we can highlight those natural pauses that occur at the top and bottom of our breath cycle. The audible sound of our breath pushing and pulling through the slight constriction of our throat will allow us to focus more on the silence of the space in between.
Asana Practice: This practice can be taken through as a breath-by-breath flow, focusing on that natural pause at the top and bottom of the breath. If you choose to flow, repeat it a few times on each side. Or take this as a hatha practice and pause in each pose to find a little space in the joints, the posture itself.
(Mountain > Upward Salute w/interlace hands > Mountain > Warrior I > Reverse Warrior I > Pyramid > Warrior III > Standing Forward Fold > Downward Facing Dog > Extended Child’s Pose > Plank > Standing Forward Fold > Mountain) Repeat Other Side
Remember to always practice within your own limits and take care of physical and emotional well-being.
