Yoga Inspiration: But Wait. There’s More.

But Wait. There’s More.

Do you feel like just when you think something is coming to an end, it offers you with more? Depending on the circumstance this could be an exciting notion. “But wait! There’s more!” However, there’s times when it seems a little more questionable, “But wait? There’s more?”. I’d also wager that at times these two feelings can interchange with each other through the course of the situation. Those moments when we find that excitement, only to be followed by disappointment, and then joy, and so on.

We know life is not linear. We know not all things end when we anticipate. Whether it’s a work project, an unexpected extra day on your vacation, the argument that seems to resurface, or a bottomless cup of coffee. We must be prepared to move beyond what we anticipate.

Our yoga practice can help prepare us for “the more”. Easy or hard, our yoga practice can teach us that we are capable of just a little more. Just one more breath, one more posture, one more meditative moment.

This week we will work on finding just a little more in all aspects of our practice.

Breathwork Practice: Let’s take this practice to the breath with our Box Breathing. Counting equal; inhales, exhales, and pauses in between. I want you to start with a 4 count for each and then try to build up to the 5 or even 6 counts for each. Perhaps you begin with 10 breaths on 4, then 5 breaths on 5, and finally 1-2 breaths on 6. If extending your breath like this is too challenging for you at this time, then consider staying with your comfortable count but practicing for an extra 1-3mins.

Asana Practice: There are many ways this can be interpreted depending on the type of practice you choose. I’ll suggest Yin this week but feel free to find a little more within any asana practice you are in this week.

Suggested time in each Yin posture, 10 breaths beyond your initial need to move. It is worth noting that you can welcome yoga props into the postures to support the postures.
Crossed-Legged Seat > Deer Pose (R) > Windshield Wipers (counter 4-5 breaths) > Deer Pose (L) > Windshield Wipers (counter 4-5 breaths) > Caterpillar > Cat/Cow (counter 4-5 breaths) > Extended Child’s Pose > Extended Child’s Pose + Lateral Stretch (R) > Extended Child’s Pose + Lateral Stretch (L) > Seated Twist (R) > Seated Twist (L) > Seated Butterfly > Legs Up the Wall

Remember to always practice within your own limits and take care of physical and emotional well-being. If the practice of Yin Yoga is new or unclear to you, stay tuned next month as I will be helping you explore this practice further!
