Yoga Inspiration: The Power of the Breath

The Power of the Breath

When I started to really develop a yoga practice – beyond the asanas – one of the biggest changes for me was how aware I became of my breath. Not so much moment to moment, but more so situational changes. The shortness felt when scared, the quickness when engaging in cardio exercises, and the smoothness of the breath when I was relaxed. Have you ever noticed if your breath changes around certain people or within certain places?

Once I realized how much it changed, I began to learn how to control it. Intentionally breathing deeper in stressful situations to keep me focused and calm. Using it to expand and emphasize parts of my body. Working on controlling the pace of it when in long cardio events so that my heart rate would, eventually, lower within an endurance event.

The power of the breath cannot be denied. In life and in our yoga practice, it is our barometer. If we are holding our breath, we need to make space, or adjust, to allow it to flow freely. When it quickens, we know we are working hard, which is good at times, we also know we need to find the space to let it slow and rest.

How does this translate to our inspiration this week? This week our movement will be guided by the breath. Finding a flow that, at times, may quicken to intentionally quicken our breathing and feel the focus on the core on the exhale. We will find space and time to focus on the movement of the diaphragm and rib cage.

Let’s look ahead at how we can build our practice this week:
Remember to always practice within your own limits and take care of physical and emotional well-being.

Asana Practice:
Crossed-Legged Seat: breath awareness, diaphragm breathing > Lateral Bend: rib cage expansion (R/L) > Seated Twist: pause in the twist and regulate the breath (R/L) > Moving breath by breath repeat X 3: Seated Upward Salute > Lateral Bend (R) > Seated Upward Salute > Lateral Bend (L) > Seated Updated Salute > Twist (R) > Seated Upward Salute > Twist (L)
