Yoga Inspiration: The Little Things

The Little Things

Isn’t it funny when you look back on life’s moments. While we may categorize our life by larger events; before marriage, after college, before the passing of a loved one. We often recall many of the little intricacies and explicit moments that often stick in our minds. It’s like the time you climbed a mountain, and you recall an interesting plant, by your feet, that you spotted at the top. These little moments are memory triggers! They, collectively, help us recall the larger events in our lives.

How does this translate to our inspiration this week? We are going to work on the “memory triggers” the small movements and spaces in the body that help us collectively move and breathe. Our practice will also reduce our stress, increase our dopamine levels, and in the end, collectively contribute to building our memory processes.

Like most functions of the brain, the ability to recall and have memories is still being studied. However, there is a lot we know. Such as how memories are formed and the various areas of the brain required to form, consolidate, store, and recall. We also know that physical activity, and meditation are both beneficial to help with these processes.

Let’s look ahead at how we can build our practice this week:

Yoga Nidra: This week I am recommending Yoga Nidra as a means to create rest, stress relief, and a reset for your nervous system. If you do not have a regular video/class you attend for this practice, you can try this sample from YouTube.

Asana Practice:

Supine > Pointing and flexing of the toes > Wind Relieving > Dead Bug > Rolling of the ankles and wrists > Seated Easy > Squeezing and stretching of the hands > Side Bend > flexion and extension of the wrists (R/L) > Breathe from belly, ribs, chest, nose X 7 > Table Top > Toes stretches > Low Lunge (R) > Knees, Chest, Chest, Chin > Downward Facing Dog > Low Lunge (L) > Knees, Chest, Chin > Downward Facing Dog > Yoga Squat > Prone > Baby Cobra > Rest

Remember to always practice within your own limits and take care of physical and emotional well-being. If the practice of Yin Yoga is new to you, stay tuned next month as I will be helping you explore this practice further!
