Finding Space
For the first time in 4 years, I have found a little space. An opportunity to play a little, to release, rest, and relax without an immediate leap to the next thing. This doesn’t mean having nothing to do or no responsibilities. But it does mean I have more space to think, reflect, and feel – that last one is the hard one to dial in on for me.
Yesterday I was in a Hips & Hamstrings yoga class. I wasn’t teaching, I was the student. I knew within the first few moments that I coming to my mat yesterday was needed. My eyes instantly started to water, not tears of sadness, but of energy release. Does anyone else have this happen? As we moved through the postures the teacher gave ample space to allow us to find our own movement, practice, and space. Damn, did I appreciate that yesterday! It felt like a full 60mins that was about me, not what the teacher wanted, not what others were doing, but just what I wanted. It was perfect.
The class inspired me to help you create space in your body this week. Getting into areas of our postures with an extra breath or two to explore, suggesting non-traditional ways to move into the postures that create space and exploration along the way within your body.
Let’s look ahead at how we can build our practice this week:
Journaling Suggestion: Perhaps take some space to reflect this week. Be intentional about creating the space, an environment, where you can focus on yourself. Even if just for 5-10 mins, dial in and record your thoughts. If you are someone who likes to take pen to paper for this, I recently was gifted a gorgeous journal from my graduate Jane who makes leather journals – you can find her here!
Asana Practice: This week I encourage you to take time in your postures, move, explore, and find pockets of space. Come out of the posture and return in a different way.
Supine Bound Angle > Windrelieving > Half Windrelieving > Seated Easy Pose > Lateral Side Bends > Torso Circles > Seated Wide Legged Forward Fold > Table Top > Cat/Cow > Right: Gate > SeeSaw > Runner’s Lunge > Tiger > Pigeon > Repeat O/S
Remember to always practice within your own limits and take care of physical and emotional well-being.
