Power. It’s a word that can feel loud, strong, almost forceful.
From a definition standpoint, it carries many meanings depending on its use. In reference to movement, power is often described as the ability “to move or travel with great speed or force.” When we think of power in this way, we imagine a maximum-effort sprint, an explosive jump, or someone lifting a car. It feels dynamic, is visible and impressive.
And yet… this doesn’t exactly align with what we experience on a yoga mat. So how does our practice have power?
Yes, many of us have attended a “Power Flow.” We may equate power with pace, heat, or intensity. But perhaps there’s another way to consider it.
Power can also be defined as the quality of an ability or an act.
Pause with that for a moment. Allow us to consider the true power in our practice.
Power, in yoga, isn’t necessarily about how fast you move or how strong you appear. Perhaps you’ve experienced your “mat neighbor” moving into an unsupported headstand and thought “wow!” – visible and impressive. But I can promise you they didn’t arrive with speed or force. Quote the opposite! It took presence within the movement, integrity of the breath and consistency of their attention. It was a power that demanded the willingness to focus and stay with it.
Recently, in conversations with both new practitioners and students considering a 200HR Yoga Teacher Training, one theme has quietly revealed itself: the practice of yoga has power.
Not loud power.
Not performative power.
But transformative power.
Some have described it as the power given to truly explore themselves. There is immense value in self-awareness. Through this we can be with ourselves, explore our thoughts and consider our actions and reactions. Others have spoken about discovering the power of silence. The power of stillness. The power of a peace they have never felt before. For some, it’s as simple and profound as the power to choose time building community with like-minded people.
Yoga is unique in this way. It offers us to find power, both through strength and through softness. Whether through dynamic flow or through quiet meditation; there is no need to perform or impress because the power lives in the arrival.
You arrive.
You breathe.
You practice.
And everything after that begins to shape you. You begin to realize that finding your power doesn’t have to be about force, speed, or even impressive to those around you. Your power can be found in your presence.
Has there been a time recently when you found power within your practice that you didn’t expect? Perhaps over the next couple of weeks, you journal after your practice and note moments of power. Notice if they are physical moments or more internal moments.
Join us on the floor.
