Stand Tall – Like an Unshakable Mountain

Tada – Mountain, Asana – Pose. Our Tadasana teaches us to stand firmly, feet planted into the earth, while we have the inverse action of standing tall, perhaps bringing clarity and enlightenment as the energy flows up through the body.

This past week I had the opportunity to visit the mountains twice. The sheer size of them put the past few weeks into perspective. Despite being weathered and facing strong winds, they are always firmly grounded. But even mountains experience change. Small pieces crumble from time to time, and if we look very closely, over long periods of time, we can see wear.

This week, let’s focus on standing tall, appearing unshakable, bringing clarity and energy to our days despite the weathered and wear we may feel at times.

Journaling Ideas: This week’s topic could be about times when you have held strong when inside you felt like you could crumble. Write about how you found the strength to keep moving. What or who helped you ground, stand firmly?

Meditation Ideas: A standing meditation in Tadasana would be a great way to feel that firmness through the feet. If you can, do this on the ground in bare feet. Bring focus on the energy coming from the earth into the feet and guide it up through the body until you reach the crown of the head. Take your time, breath consciously and calmly.

Yoga Poses to Add to Your Practice This Week:

  • Mountain Pose (Tadasana): feel the stability of the ground beneath you and stand tall.
  • Supported Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand against a wall and firmly press the back body into the wall to feel tall and supported.
  • One Legged Mountain Pose – arms raised (Eka Pada Tadasana): test your balance and unshakable presence.
  • Standing Quad Stretch: once again balance but give yourself time to stretch.
  • Mountain Pose w/Crossed Legs (Tadasana variation): welcome in variety to your Mountain Pose.
  • Twisted Mountain Pose (Parivrtta Tadasana): Add a twist to test the gaze and change perspective.
