Repetition Brings Ease
They say it takes 10,000 hours to become a “master” of something. Maybe a little more relatable is; if you focused for 8 hours per day, 7 days a week, for 3.42 years, you’d have spent 10,000 hours on that topic. But mastery is not just about the hours put in, it’s about what we do within those hours; and I can promise, repetition plays a key role.
Repetition is the act of repeating – a technique that often is thought as uninspiring when in fact it’s one of the most powerful tools we have to propel forward. If we want to memorize a poem, we read it repeatedly and perhaps we speak it repeatedly. Until our brain recalls it with ease. When we were learning to walk, we kept returning to it over and over until walking became something we could do with simplicity.
What we notice is with repetition comes ease!
The effort paradox is that by working hard things are made to look easy. In other words, the more effort that is put in the more effortless it will look to others.
If we take this into our practice, the smoother the movement, the steadier the presence, the calmer the response – the more repetition lives beneath it. When a student says that a pose is challenging for them, I like to say that means they just need to do it more – aside from the considerations of injuries and mobility limitations of course!
In what area of your practice do you struggle the most? Perhaps it’s more within the meditative or pauses taken? Or maybe there’s a posture that challenges you? Perhaps this week you take an extra 15mins per day with that and see how much you grow over just one week.
